'Between
how we see something and what sense we make of it,
there is a place of questioning. For me it is the
most alive place in our consciousness, filled with
powerful emotions, far-reaching realizations and
extraordinary sensations. In any form of creativity
the dance of our decisions is affected by the
choices we make there. My work takes polarities,
contradictions, impacts and merging as the beginning
of a journey to this place, and the results are far
from predictable.
Inspirations come from many sources - the uplifting quality of wild and remote
landscapes, ancient traditions that revere the land
and the Earth's wisdom, the western Mystical
Tradition and Vajrayana Buddhism, among others. I am
grateful to have had prolonged opportunities to
study them.'
Jonathan Middlemiss is a multidiscipline artist
mainly working in clay, but also painting and land
art. His ceramics have
been awarded and are in public
collections and museums in Europe and the Far East.
Exhibitions have been held in Britain,
the U.S.A., Europe, the Middle East, Japan, Korea and New
Zealand, and featured in books and
other publications. He has taught in Higher Education
and schools and to adults and children with physical and
sensory disabilities.
Other recent projects explore
our experiences of landscape through developing
multi-sensory awareness. Please visit
